Learn more about COVID-19 and its impact on the LGBTQI community.
The LGBTQI Community at large face constant discrimination and stigma that create barriers to living full and productive lives. TransNewYork is a grassroots organization that provides group and individual counseling in which we address issues such as homelessness, prostitution, drug use, unprotected sex and sexual abuse.
Education and Prevention Program
To support HIV awareness, our Education and Prevention Program offers health education workshops and LGBTQI sensitivity training for providers. Our program reaches out to settings within the Queens County region and beyond. Wherever and whoever, our goal is to educate and help members of the transgender community and the LGBTQI Community at large to become aware of the risk of exposure to the HIV virus.
Counseling and Therapy
At TransNewYork we provide therapeutic counseling to couples, groups and individuals to complement medical services in treating the whole patient.
Many clients face multiple challenges, including coping with the reactions of others, developing and adopting strategies for maintaining physical and emotional health, initiating changes in behavior to prevent HIV transmission to others, and reducing the risk for acquiring additional STDs. Our mental health counselors are a critical component in creating wellness for HIV-infected persons.
Education and Peer Support
Effective HIV education can help prevent new diagnoses by providing people with information about HIV and how transmission occurs. In doing so, we equip individuals with the knowledge to protect themselves.
TransNewYork educators teach through individual and group sessions:
- HIV Management
- Preventive Health
- Risk Reduction
- Peer Navigation
Educating the public at large will help prevent discrimination against HIV infected individuals. Our programs bring the latest information about HIV to many schools, and our community outreach helps individuals understand how discriminating against an HIV infected person can have devastating effects and may cause an increase of Aids diagnoses in the community. To accomplish this, TransNewYork provides the following:
- Professional Presentations
- Intervention Programs
- Speakers who can share their experiences living with HIV
