Helping People at Risk Due to COVID-19
TransNewYork wants to help those in the LGBTQI community who have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic. We are very concerned about the health and welfare of the members of the community. This goes beyond the concern of being infected with the virus and the risks that go along with it. We are concerned with the mental wellbeing of the members of the community who already suffer from anxiety and depression.
COVID-19 and its Impact on the LGBTQI Community
COVID-19 and the quarantine associated with it are impacting the LGBTQI community, particularly the transgender community, in many ways.
Access to and De-prioritization of required health services
Given overloaded health systems, treatment of LGBTQI people may be interrupted or deprioritized, including HIV treatment and testing, hormonal treatment, and gender-affirming treatments for trans people. Decisions about scaling back services should be medically-based and data-driven, and should not reflect a bias against LGBTQI people.
Domestic violence and abuse
Due to stay-at-home restrictions, many LGBTQI youths are confined in hostile environments with unsupportive family members or co-habitants. This can increase their exposure to violence, as well as their anxiety and depression.
Access to work and livelihood
LGBTQI people are more likely to be unemployed and to live in poverty than the general population. Many in the LGBTQI community work in the informal sector and lack access to paid sick leave, unemployment compensation, and coverage. Additionally, due to discriminatory paid leave policies that do not cover all genders equally, LGBTQI people may not be able to take time off from work to care for family members.
